I find it interesting that you liked the movie Coraline more than the book. My boyfriend and I had the exact opposite reaction! The movie imagery is undoubtedly very good, but there is something about the movie plot that doesn’t quite work. It feels a little rushed, a little… not enough.

Coraline is so much MORE in the book. She is braver and smarter and exactly the person you want your kids to realize they are capable of being, I think.

Maybe it depends on what kind of person you are? Like, if you’re a very visual person, it helps you to see the vivid imagery depicted in the movie prior to reading the book? Whereas for some, I think the pictures they create in their mind can be scarier than the movie, or different, and some people might like the imagining what things look like better than the telling.

Why do you like the movie more?

    • I definitely love books more than movies, but for this particular book, for which I saw the movie first, I could just imagine things like the other mother looking like a spider/monster rather than what I would have imagined otherwise. Sure, it was more scary, Coraline was a stronger protagonist like she is supposed to be. However I felt the need to applaud the person who made the illustrated movie. As a graphic designer myself, I know how hard it is to make things merely from a couple of descriptive words. But as an aspiring writer, I do know how hard it is to come up with tales untold. So maybe that’s the reason. Although I totally agree with what you said for the most part of my reading experience.
