Stand Alone

Paperback

YA/Chick Lit
Why I read it:
I really liked The Confessions Of A Shopoholic by the author and this book is supposedly better than most of her work.
Summary:
Emma is like every girl in the world. She has a few little secrets.
Secrets from her mother:
1. I lost my virginity in the spare bedroom to Danny Nussbaum while Mum and Dad were downstairs watching Ben Hur.
…From her boyfriend:
2. I’m a size twelve. Not a size eight, like Connor thinks.
3. I’ve always thought Connor looks a bit like Ken. As in Barbie and Ken.
…From her colleagues:
4. When Artemis really annoys me, I feed her plant orange juice. (Which is pretty much every day)
5. It was me who jammed the copier that time. In fact, all the times.
…Secrets she wouldn’t share with anyone in the world:
6. My G string is hurting me.
7. I faked my Maths GCSE grade on my CV.
8. I have no idea what NATO stands for. Or even what it is…
…until she spills them all to a stranger on a plane. At least, she thought he was a stranger…
Review:
This book was a perfect example of what one can expect from Sophie Kinsella. I liked the Confessions movie/book and decided to give this book a go. Funny and fast paced, this book did not have a single boring page. Some parts of it were without a doubt a bit dumb and somewhat far fetched but it didn’t really bother me at all, like it normally would. Her sense of humor is what kept me going throughout the book. I really enjoyed both the characters and totally related to the fact that we all keep secrets we think will hurt people if revealed and thus face difficulties managing those lies.
I recommend this book to Sophie Kinsella fans, Legally Blonde fans, and to some extent David Levithan fans.
Some people really hated it and some really enjoyed it, so it depends on person to person I guess.
Quotes:
“The truth is, some relationships are supposed to last forever, and some are only supposed to last a few days. That’s the way life is.”
“Relationships are a battle. They are a chess game. And what did I do? I just threw all my chess pieces down on the board at once, and said, “Here! Have them all!”
“Carried away.
He got a little carried away.
This is like saying Hitler was a tad aggressive.”
“Relationships are all about trust and equality. If one person shares, then the other person should share, too.”
“I hurl the glass teapot to the ground.
We both stare at it, stunned.
“it was supposed to break,” I explain after a pause, ” and that was going to signify that yes, I would throw something away . If I knew it wasn’t right for me.”
Rating:
I love Sophie Kinsella’s books and writing style. So much fun! I’ll have to read this one soon!

I really like Sophie Kinsella but haven’t read this one. She does a good job taking an issue of the day and then writing a likable character around said issue with a lot of wit and humor. My favorite is The Undomestic Goddess which is about workaholism and if you can get over the ridiculous set up is completely charming.
Kinsella is certainly the best chick lit writer I’ve ever read. Best of the genre for sure. The Shopaholic movie made me nuts because they had such a great book to take it from and then they changed it all around. Why! Oh well.

I have not read that one yet, but I’ll add it to my TBR!
I really like her writing style even though her books have a few flaws which I overlook cause its not easy creating such easy loving characters. The movie changed the plot so that was disappointing but ah well!

For sure. She definitely falls into the chick lit tropes on occasion but I think she is one of the best writers in the genre.

I agree .. Indians still don’t think reading as a utilization of time or as a source of joy!! Me and my sisters were born to read :). And founf out quite late that our mum used to read while she was now. Though she donesnt do so now as she doesnt get much time!
